APPG Welcomes pledge by the US to work towards an “AIDS Free Generation”

The APPG welcomes the announcement by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the United States will work towards creating an “AIDS free generation.”

The speech, which announced the intentions of the Obama Administration to mobilise and lead global efforts to defeat the HIV and AIDS pandemic, highlighted recent developments in science which demonstrate that HIV treatment can be 96% effective in preventing the transmission of HIV. Hilary Clinton announced that the US will commit an additional $60 million to rapidly scale up combination prevention in parts of four countries in sub-Saharan Africa. She also urged other donors to “scale up support for treating as many people as possible. Measure the impact and share the results, so we can all learn from each other.”

Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on HIV and AIDS, Pamela Nash said, “Hilary Clinton has laid down the gauntlet for other donors to scale up their response to the AIDS pandemic, and we urge the UK Government to respond. For the first time in 30 years we can credibly talk about bringing about an end to AIDS within a generation – we have the tools and the evidence to make it happen, all that is lacking is the political will.”
